The forest

In the forest there lived four friends, they were Kirsty the Kiwi, Devon the Deer, Kilroy the Kea and Potato the Pig. They all enjoyed each other’s company and lived close to each other in the deep, dark, dry, grassy deserted forest.
It was a burning, hot sunny day, the temperature raced to over 40 degrees! All the animals felt like they were burning up, like a sausage in a flaming BBQ, which made Potato especially worried. Killory shouted out to the others “I’ve got me two freezing, cold, icy ice creams for the first friends to fan my feathers!”
“I’ll help you fan your feathers” said Devon in a calm voice. Immediately followed by Kirsty who quietly muttered “I can help you too”.
“Haha” laughed Kilroy, “Just joking I don’t have me any nice freezing,  ice cream”
Potato sighed, “You guys always fall for Kilroy's silly jokes”.
Devon and Kirsty blushed as they hid their heads in dark shame.

While the animals lay in the nice cold shade, a logging truck raced by and the driver threw a cigarette butt out his window. As it flew by Kilroy was planning his next prank. Suddenly Kilroy smelt something, it was something mysterious like a smoky breeze of a house catching on fire! Kilroy tried to wake the other’s up by shouting “Fire, Fire, wake up you dosey animals.” They woke up saying “We’re not falling for your jokes this time.” Kilroy replied “But there is actually is a fire, look!”
“We told you we’re not falling for your jokes” said Potato
“Just look” said Kilroy.
“Ok, ok” whispered Kirsty “Where are we looking?” shouted Devon
“Over there, look!”
“Oh no!” said Potato “You weren’t joking!”
“No, I’m not” shouted Kilroy
Potato calmly explained, “This is how we are going to survive, follow me to the cold, freezing river, we can hide under the water until the fire passes”
“But what about all the other animals?” Cried Kirsty
“I will gather them up in my arms and carrying them with us” replied Devon.

All the friends ran to the cool river sea and dived into the refreshing, cold, crystal clear water. The fire raced over the forest, past the animals, leaving a trail of black ruined forest in its wake. The animals were saved and everyone lived happily ever after except for Frederick the frog because he didn’t make it to the beginning of our story.

The End

*This is my narrative I wrote with my writing group ‘Twain’. We had to create characters using the following success criteria

  1. Interesting names
  2. Show who they were by speech and actions
  3. Contrast characters personalities
